How are cost management pressures impacting how consultants advise employers on healthcare benefit decisions? The second annual Benefit Consultant Sentiment Index (The Index) by MedCity News sheds new light on care navigation and how employers are thinking about cancer care, GLP-1 drugs, virtual care and more to support their employees.

The survey for The Index, conducted earlier this spring, includes unique perspectives and experiences of more than 100 skilled benefits consultants to gauge employer healthcare benefit trends and provide a deep dive on the needs of self-insured employers amid industry changes.

Among some of the key findings are:

  • Consultants say that the importance of preventive care benefits for employers rose significantly in 2024 to 42% compared with 29% last year.
  • 84% of consultants surveyed report that digital health point solution fatigue continues among their clients, with 63% reporting that their clients are considering consolidating their digital offerings under a single healthcare navigation solution.
  • 61% of consultants are advising clients more often on new drug costs and pricing strategies for their self-funded employer plans
