At the 2020 INVEST conference in Chicago, April 21-22, a few hospital innovation executives will present specific problems that they are hoping to solve using technology. Following their presentation, selected startups will get to highlight their products as potential solutions. This form is meant to collect applications of startups who want to solve those problems that hospital innovation executives outline. Those challenges are summarized below. Each startup can apply to solve two problems outlined. Deadline to apply is 5 PT, Feb 14.

Roberta Schwartz, chief innovation officer, Houston Methodist

  • Doctor's ETA for Hospital Rounds
  • Family-Doctor Video-Conferencing from Patient Bedside

For the first problem, Schwartz is looking for a tech solution that uses geolocation and AI to provide a rough expected time of arrival of a doctor to patients and family members waiting in hospital rooms. She stresses that the solution should not be minute-by-minute tracking of physicians but provide a solution to the endless waiting that is routine for patients. This is not just a boon for patients and caregivers - who more often than not contend with long waits - but positive for doctors who can speak to family members in person without having to field multiple calls from those who missed the visit later.

For the second problem, Schwartz is looking for a multi-person video conferencing capability using HIPAA compliant software that will allow multiple family members from around the country to dial-in and talk to the doctor while he/she is doing rounds at the hospital right from the patient bedside.

Emily Lafeir, senior director of  innovation operations at the Steele Institute for Health Innovation, Geisinger Health System

  • Single and Seamless Platform to Manage Chronic Disease Patients with Co-Morbidities
  • Increase Fill Rate for Canceled Appointments with Employees

For the first problem, Lafeir points to the current challenge of having to deal with multiple care management solutions to tackle a patient who has more than one chronic disease. So if a patient has heart failure and diabetes, there is no single platform available that can help clinicians manage both conditions. Patients too have to juggle multiple apps to stay on top of their disease and communicate with the care management team. Therefore, Lafeir is looking for a single health IT solutions that will be the gateway to helping patients manage multiple chronic diseases.

For the second problem that Lafeir wishes to address, she is looking for a text-based solution that can alert Geisinger's employees that an appointment is available when a patient is a no-show or cancels a scheduled appointment. This squarely deals with throughput and allows the integrated health system to cost-effectively deal with the problem of last-minute cancellations while also providing a benefit for its employees.
